What is the significance of Dussehra in India

As per Hindu mythology, Ravana, who was the king of Lanka, once abducted Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. They were on a 14-year exile at that time. Lord Rama, along with his younger brother, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and the Vaar Sena, rescued Maa Sita.

Finally, on the 10th day of the battle, Lord Rama won over Ravana. Hence, we celebrate this day, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

On this day, celebrating good over evil, effigies of Ravana are burned across India. Along with the effigy of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnath’s effigies are also burnt on this day.

Vijayadashami is also known for Maa Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. In West Bengal, this day is highly celebrated by people with Sindoor Khela and Dhunuchi dance. They immerse Durga idols (Durga Visarjan) through vibrant procession.

Altogether, this day is celebrated by people around the world, marking the goddess’s return to her heavenly abode.

Dussehra 2025 Timings: Puja Vidhi and Rituals

Dussehra is celebrated in almost every part of India, but differently. In North India, Ramleela performances are famous and loved by people across the world. This process of burning Ravana’s effigy is called Ravana Dahan.

In the South West, Ayudha Puja honours vehicles, knowledge, and tools. In Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, Shama Puja takes places, where Pandavas’ victory over the Kauravas is celebrated.

In East India (West Bengal), Dusshera coincides with the end of Durga Puja. The idols of Maa Durga are immersed at the end of the festival.
