Shivratri 2026: Introduction

Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually to pray to our deity, Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar, this day is observed on the first day of the first half of the lunar month of Phalguna. On this day, our deities, Shiva and Parvati, got married. Besides, Shiva performs his ritual dance popularly known as Tandava on this special day.

Shivratri 2026: Significance & Importance

Maha Shivratri has a great significance through various Puranic legends. It includes the cosmic dance of Shiva for creation, preservation, and destruction.

This festival is significant because Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati got married.

 

 

Lord Shiva even swallowed the Halahala poison during Samudra Manthana, which earned him the name Nilakantha at Neelkanth Mahadev Temple.

The festival is also mentioned in texts like Skanda, Linga, and Padma Purana. Mahashivratri inspired devotion, fasting, and Shaiva traditions. It even unites artists in dance events like Natyanjali at temples in Chidambaram, Khajuraho, Konark, Pattadakal, and Modhera.

Tamil Nadu

Mahashivratri is celebrated in Tamil Nadu in the  Annamalaiyar temple located in the Tiruvannamalai district.

There is a special way of worship on this day, which is Girivalam or Giri Pradashina. This is a 14-kilometer barefoot walk around Shiva’s temple on a hilltop. A huge lamp is lit on the hilltop, which has oil and camphor in it.

Devotees undertake a ritual marathon to the 12 Shiva shrines in Kanyakumari.

 

Karnataka

In Karnataka, Mahashivratri is an important festival celebrated with much enthusiasm and happiness. Devotees of Shiva stay awake all night and visit temples nearby to take part in the rituals of Mahashivratri.

 

 

 

 

Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

Special poojas are held in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at Pancharamas – Amararamam of Amaravati, Somaramam of Bhimavaram, Draksharamam, Kumararama of Samarlakota, and Ksheerarama of Palakollu. After Shivratri, days are celebrated as Brahmotsavalu at Srisailam. Even Shivratri yatras take place at Mallayya Gutta near Kambhalapalle, Gundlakamma Kona near Railway Koduru, Penchalakona, Bhairavakona, Uma Maheswaram, and many others.

 

Mandi, Himachal Pradesh

The Mahashivratri at Mandi town is famous for Maha Shivratri celebrations. More than 200+ Gods and Goddesses assemble in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, to celebrate Shivratri. Mandi is located on the banks of the Beas, which is also known as the Cathedral of Temples, and is one of the oldest towns of Himachal Pradesh.

 

 

 

Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, near the city of Kota, observe Maha Shivratri in the areas in the Geparnath Mahadev Temple.

Shobha yatras are organized in different cities along with devotees visiting the Shiva temple and observing fasting on this day
