Award-winning DD anchor Gitanjali Aiyar passes away
Four-time Best Anchor Award winner Gitanjali Aiyar passed away at the age of 71. Aiyar was among the very first few English-language news readers in India.
Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the pioneering female news presenters in India, who worked for the national broadcaster Doordarshan, has passed away. She is survived by her son and daughter, Pallavi Aiyar, an acclaimed journalist in her own right.
After graduating from Kolkata’s Loreto College, Gitanjali Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971 and received the best anchor award on four occasions. In 1989, she was honored with the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women. Additionally, she held a diploma from the National School of Drama (NSD). Alongside her news presenting duties, she gained popularity through print advertisements and her role in Sridhar Kshirsagar’s TV drama ‘Khandaan’. Throughout her illustrious career spanning several decades, she was also associated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Gitanjali Aiyar, the experienced news anchor, had been battling Parkinson’s disease. According to close family sources, Aiyar collapsed while returning home from a walk. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she unfortunately passed away during transportation. She is survived by her son and daughter.
